Evaluation Question 3
Evaluation Question 3 - What Kind Of Media Institute Might Distribute Your Product and Why?
Our film would probably be indie, as the target audience is considerably small compared to the size of the population. It is not likely to be produced by Hollywood as it is set in a typically English location and with a small budget would probably not appeal to the American audience. However if it did it can be noted similar to films such as “The 6th Sense” which is an American thriller. Although the story line is not particurly similar, our film is also a thriller with the same sounds affects to scare the audience as what would have been used in the “6th Sense”.
NBC universal is one of the 6 main American studios, Over the years, Universal has made deals to distribute and/or co-finance films with various small companies, such as Imagine Entertainment, Amblin Entertainment, Morgan Creek Productions, Spyglass Entertainment, Working Title Films. They could possibly distribute our film as they have worked with small companies in the past, such as Working Title who have produced films such as “Shaun of the Dead”. NBC Universal is their parent company however they are not well known for producing horrors such as ours.
A production company that may distribute our film as it is well known for horrors is Hammer Films Productions. They have worldwide distribution and they were very successful receiving a good profit, this is largely due to distribution partnerships with major USA studio Warner Bros. They produced films that are similar to ours such as “psycho”, which includes the same horror conventions as our film. Such as a male psychopathic protagonist and a innocent female agonist.
However since the 2000’s the company are considered to be in hibernation and has not released any mainstream horrors since “Child’s Play” in 1986.
We would ideally like our film to be released by a production company such as “Columbia Pictures” which released “The Grudge”. in 2006, Columbia, helped by such blockbusters as The “Da Vinci Code”, “The Pursuit of Happiness” and “Casino Royale”, reached an all time record high sum of $1.711 billion, which is still an all-time yearly record for any studio. However they are not well known for joining up with smaller production companies, but instead companies like “Sony Pictures Entertainment”. Also there films often have to be able to appeal to an American Audience which ours may struggle to do.
However small budget films that are not released by large institutions also have the ability to earn a lot of money. “Paranormal Activity” for example was released by “Major Motion Picture Studio”. On September 25, 2009, the movie opened in thirteen college towns across the United States. On his website, director Oren Peli invited internet users to "demand" where the film went next by voting on eventful.com.
Our film should be released because it’s a new and original idea and may produce great chances for selling merchandise. A soundtrack can be created easily with related tracks and can be sold in places such as ITunes. It would ideally be distributed into cinemas as it is a typical film that could be popular to the teenage audience; we could use adverts and slogans on public forums such as Myspace and Facebook. Afterwards however can be sold through websites such as Amazon.
